Students joined the Women in Action club in building U to fundraise for a scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded to one lucky female student next year.

From noon to two o’clock on Wednesday March 1st, the Women in Action club representatives Reem Motan, Denita Perry and Heaven Newsom stood in front of their Mardi Gras themed table. The festive girls cheerfully handed out beads and chocolate to fellow students for a nominal fee. The ladies accepted donations from students and were grateful for each contribution.

The goal of the Women in Action’s Mardi Gras table, this semester, was to raise money to provide a scholarship for an eligible student next year. The scholarship winner will be determined by the Moraine Valley Foundation committee with the input from multiple representatives of the Moraine Valley Women’s Leadership Organization as well.

Students can apply for this scholarship next year if they posses a 3.0 or above GPA, are a female, and have performed some kind of leadership role either on campus or around the community. Applications to apply for the esteemed scholarship will open next year.

What’s most unique about this scholarship is that the funds will be appropriated by students for students. Reem Mortan commented saying, “Scholarships have always helped me and I just want to pay it forward, by providing other students with scholarships.” A noble cause on her behalf, Reem holds a great sense of pride in giving back to her fellow students and community.

Graduating this year, she hopes to leave a mark and a hopeful future for a student next year, who needs it.

Denita Perry has been incredibly thrilled as this is her first semester with the club. Denita has high hopes and ambition in her ability to give back to the community, as well. Heaven Newsom, another motivated spokeswoman at the event said, “Women in Action is really nice because we get involved in the student experience”.

Women in Action hosts multiple activities throughout the school year. Events coming up later this year are the tea party with Moraine Valley’s president Dr. Sylvia Jenkins, a pizza dinner the club is hosting, and a food drive in April. All fund raised proceeds and donations will go to fund the student to student scholarship. The funds raised for the food drive will be donated to the Mosque Foundation which provides food to families throughout the south side of Chicago.

For more information or to get involved, the Women in Action club meets every Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. in room U209. Maura Vizza, the club advisor can be contacted at
